Hopes and fears bridge the Jordan river

Article Abstract:

Palestinians planning for self-rule are discussing how to open their borders for free movement of people and trade, particularly the Allenby Bridge which links the West Bank and Jordan. Official PLO policy is that confederation should occur after the establishment of a completely independent Palestinian state. Some fear that with independence the West Bank might become a satellite of Jordan. Palestinians hope for a republican system so the state could not enter confederation with a monarchy. The West Bank has historical and social ties with Jordan. Economics may bring confederation sooner.

Why Arafat could lose the peace

Article Abstract:

The Palestine Liberation Organisation selected loyalists as negotiators with the Israelis at the US State Department. A new elected council, linked with the Palestine National Council (PNC), will represent Palestinians in exile. The Israelis want 15 elected members on the self-rule council but senior official Dr Nabil Shaath wants 180, the same as the number of seats on the PNC for Palestinians from the occupied territories. PLO power will diminish.

Israel cuts ground from under Palestinians

Article Abstract:

The strong protests which have followed Israeli attempts to extend areas of Jewish settlement in the West Bank show that the peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians has not had the positive impact anticipated by the international community. There are now a number of signs of weakness in the Oslo deal, the most recent being the declaration by Israel that 70% of the West Bank is 'state land.'
