How Sir Alex Ferguson (paid 1m pounds sterling a year) may get a 2m pounds sterling fund - tax free - to play with

Article Abstract:

It is expected that the testimonial year for Manchester United Football Club Manager Alex Ferguson, whose salary is a reported 1.5 million pounds sterling a year, will raise 2 million pounds sterling. The organizers of Ferguson's testimonial fund hope to ensure that the final payment will be tax-free. Some supporters have criticized the testimonial as excessive, but the testimonial committee emphasizes that Ferguson is very popular and that most people are willingly honouring his achievements.

Bust-up on the buses

Article Abstract:

Bus service deregulation in UK cities such as Manchester seems to have attracted many operators, some of which are not at all well organised. There are now 76 separate bus companies competing with each other in Manchester, often using extremely old buses. There seem to be no proper timetables, and operators tend to stick to the most profitable routes, abandoning the remoter parts of the city. Drivers have become extremely competitive, often leading to dangerous driving.
