Hoyt Axton

Article Abstract:

Singer, songwriter and actor Hoyt Axton grew up in a songwriting family. He had a minor hit with the Civil War emancipation song 'Follow the Drinking Gourd,' and in 1962 co-wrote his first big hit with Ken Ramsey, 'Greenback Dollar.' The success of this song led to his being signed with Horizon Records and to the recording of his first album, 'The Balladeer.' He made a second album for Horizon, but then moved to Vee-Jay Records, where he made four albums. He was particularly successful following the recording of 'The Pusher' by heavy metal band Steppenwolf.
