Human rights: worth a battle?

Article Abstract:

There are a number of UK lawyers who regularly undertake trial observations and missions to countries where it is known that human rights are violated. It is difficult to assess the extent to which the presence of international lawyers influences the outcome of trials in these countries. Most missions produce detailed reports about human rights violations in specific countries, and these are used in a number of different contexts. Missions can also play a valuable role in boosting the morale of those working for human rights in the countries they visit.

The case for the defence of Third World aid

Article Abstract:

A passion to see justice done is the main driving force behind the work of Joel Joffe, the new chairman of Oxfam's Council of Trustees. He has had extensive experience in both the commercial and the voluntary sector, and has encouraged Oxfam to see that efficiency and idealism can work together. He believes that running a large charity is harder than running an industrial concern.
