I was the first mother in the family to have a mentally handicapped child. Or was I?

Article Abstract:

The mother of boy with Fragile X, a genetically inherited mental handicap, tells of the many problems she has experienced. It took a long time to get a firm diagnosis, even though she was aware from an early stage that there was something wrong with her son. She had no experience of mental handicap, and it was some time before she realized that her son could not make the connections which come naturally to other children. She and her husband had to have genetic counselling, and this strained family relationships.

Living in fear of the teacher

Article Abstract:

Almost all UK schools have a policy on bullying, but very few are prepared to take action against a teacher who bullies pupils. Teacher bullying can have an extremely negative impact on the children concerned, who may suffer considerable emotional stress and underperform academically. There are considerable problems associated with tracking down and dealing with teacher bullying, especially as teachers generally work alone in a classroom and the only evidence available is that given by the child.

Flour power

Article Abstract:

It is unusual in the UK for children to be formally taught about cooking. However, children are generally extremely enthusiastic if they are given the opportunity to cook. When making bread, for example, children enjoy watching the yeast rise and mixing the water to the right temperature, and are very keen to knead the dough. It is very important that children learn about the pleasure of using fresh ingredients, expanding their experience beyond convenience foods.
