Ignore the hysteria over debt

Article Abstract:

The international community has been misguided in focusing on cancelling debt repayments as a way of helping Nicaragua and Honduras to deal with the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch. The crisis in the region caused by the hurricane has been seized upon by campaigners for debt relief, but in fact the argument about debt relief must be kept clearly separate from the issue of Central America's emergency needs. The debate about whether debt relief is really desirable must not be clouded by extensive media coverage of the present disaster.

Why these extra hurdles for the jobless to jump are only fair

Article Abstract:

The Jobseeker's Allowance introduced by the UK government in Oct 1996 has affected unemployment statistics in a number of ways. Most significantly, it has had an impact on people's behaviour with regard to claiming unemployment benefits. It has become harder to make fraudulent claims, while some genuine claimants have been deterred by the complex nature of the new system. It is estimated that during its first six months the Job Seeker's Allowance will have reduced the number of unemployment benefit claimants by 120-250,000.

Hurdles on the road to sustained growth

Article Abstract:

Boosting productivity offers the best prospects for creating a long-term economic boom. Total factor productivity has made the largest contribution to economic growth in most countries at most times. Technological innovation also seems to be proceeding rapidly. However, no country apart from the US has yet shown any indication at all of a rise in the productivity trend. Any long-term economic boom will take place only in the US unless other countries can begin to challenge the US's technological leadership.
