If Gordon Brown looks good, buy Charlie a drink
Article Abstract:
The fact that UK Chancellor Gordon Brown has received a lot of positive media coverage is largely attributable to the work of Charlie Whelan, Brown's special adviser. He studied politics at London Polytechnic, and became a researcher at the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union. He came under the influence of Jimmy Airlie, whom he regards as one of the earliest unrecognized modernizers. He became press officer to Gordon Brown before the Labour party won the 1997 general election, and the two men developed a close working relationship.

Lawyers' pay: is it an injustice?
Article Abstract:
Considerable controversy surrounds the forthcoming investigation by the UK House of Lords into the legal aid fees being claimed by some of the country's top barristers. The Law Lords will rule on whether barristers' legal aid fees should be equivalent to the rate for private practice, or aligned with other professionals receiving payment from public funds. Leading barristers have expressed resentment at their lifestyles being called into question.
