If in doubt, cast a gentile

Article Abstract:

It is still common for Hollywood studio managers and casting directors to have negative attitudes towards Jewish actresses. Indeed, gentiles have been used even in films with an overtly Jewish message. There has been a widespread belief for many years that Jewish women are not attractive, and for a long time Jewish heroines simply did not exist. It would probably be pointless to argue in favour of only allowing Jewish actresses to play Jewish heroines, but Hollywood should at least seek to move away from its taboo on the representation of attractive Jewish women.

When Jan met Terry

Article Abstract:

Film directors Jan Svankmajer and Terry Gilliam come from very different backgrounds, but their work shows a number of similar elements, especially an obsession with dark fairy-tales. Svankmajer believes that his films deal with real stories, but that they are filled with symbols, with the imagination of the viewer therefore constantly metamorphising reality. Gilliam sees Svankmajer's work as making reality mysterious, with the world becoming a very uncertain place when inanimate objects begin moving.

Queer vision, straight talking

Article Abstract:

Filmmakers who have become closely associated with gay cinema are now shifting towards films designed to appeal to a wider audience. They are using larger budgets, mixed casts and mainstream narratives to make more commercial films, as reflected in Gregg Araki's 'The Doom Generation,' the second instalment of his 'Teen Apocalypse Trilogy.' Among the New Queer Cinema directors, Tom Kahn has probably remained closest to the genre's low-budget, experimental origins.
