I'll take my Chateau Lafite with a screwcap, thanks

Article Abstract:

Research carried out by the Geisenheim Institute on the Rhine has shown that, over a five year period, wine deteriorates less when stored in bottles with a screwcap than with traditional corks. The tainting of wine by the cork, or corking, is caused by 2-4-6 trichloranisole (TCA) being formed in the cork by phenols, chlorinated compounds and mould. Of the 25 million bottles of wine sold annually in the UK, between one in 12 and one in 20 are corked. The industry is reluctant to move to screwcaps because they look cheap, and sales of the same product in the two types of bottle has shown buyers tend to avoid the screwcap.
