In praise of the oily rags

Article Abstract:

The UK was for a long time one of the leading manufacturing centres in the world. However, manufacturing now accounts for only 20% of economic output, and the UK has become a nation of consumers, rather than manufacturers. Many Britons now feel that manufacturing has a low social status, and would prefer to be involved in the arts, property, culture, leisure or financial services. However, there are still some people who take pride in being involved in manufacturing, and there is some thriving manufacturing activity, albeit on a small scale.

Ideas beyond the nuclear station

Article Abstract:

The approaches taken by four firms of architects to dealing with the remains of Trawsfynydd nuclear power station in Wales give a useful insight into how abandoned nuclear power stations could be handled before it is possible to demolish them completely. A high-tech approach could be taken, making the remains into a strong modern structure, or the remains could be completely covered up with hills of waste. It may also be possible to cover the remains with mossy terraces or to make them into some sort of huge artwork.

A prime time for design

Article Abstract:

The BBC has attracted reasonably large audiences for its 'One Foot in the Past' series, which deals with architectural stories, and is now looking to bring architecture to a wider audience by showing at a prime viewing time. It has also decided to use a number of well-known personalities alongside heritage experts. There could be a danger of trivialising architecture by taking this approach, but having popular appeal is vital if high ratings are to be achieved.
