In shape for the new century?

Article Abstract:

There is already strong demand for skiing holidays covering the end of 1999 and the beginning of 2000. However, tour operators are finding it extremely difficult to put together packages for that particular period. This is partly due to problems with negotiating prices with hotel and chalet owners, and partly due the reluctance of airlines to run flights on New Year's Eve 1999 or on the morning of Jan 1, 2000, because of the year 2000 computer date change problem. However, it is clear that holidays allowing people to ski into the 21st century will be more expensive than those being offered in 1998.

Is it downhill all the way?

Article Abstract:

Sales of skiing holidays for the 1998 to 1999 season are so far 4% higher than for the 1997 to 1998 season. However, these were mainly early bookings, and sales have now slowed down as a result of the threat of recession. Bookings to North America are down by 8% so far, while sales of skiing holidays in France are up by 19%. Andorra is becoming much more popular, while Italy's popularity is waning. Sales of skiing holidays in the US have been negatively affected by the excess capacity on the Colorado resorts in the 1997 to 1998 season.

It's all about ups and downs

Article Abstract:

The introduction of the euro will affect British skiers, prompting them to review the way they assess the attractiveness of different destinations. They will no longer make decisions based on exchange rates, and will increasingly take account of other factors, such as how well resorts are managed.
