Insults, soundbites, repetition, clubbiness, obfuscation ...

Article Abstract:

It is widely believed in the UK that politicians are frequently guilty of hypocrisy, adultery and lying. In fact, politicians are no more likely to have faults of this kind than any other population group, but they have now become tarnished with a negative image. Ordinary people have not responded to the apparent inadequacies of politicians by rejecting them, as they realize that it is the system that is at fault, rather than individual politicians. If politicians take the risk of speaking the truth and addressing the concerns of ordinary people directly, then they must be rewarded.

Who is person of the millennium? Someone rather like me, I expect

Article Abstract:

A competition being run by Radio 4's 'Today' programme entitled 'Personality of the Millennium' has encouraged some interesting suggestions about who should be named as the most influential person of the last 1,000 years. However, it has also served to highlight the fact that the vast majority of people still have a very parochial view of the world. Almost all the personalities suggested have been male and anglophone, and no consideration has been given to people such as the emperors and philosophers of China.

Exit centre stage (yet again)

Article Abstract:

David Owen has always attracted controversy, especially when he left the Labour party to become one of the founder members of the Social Democratic Party. He has been portrayed as arrogant and difficult to work with, and has never known real political success. He has spent the last few years as chairman of the international conference on the former Yugoslavia, a position from which he has now resigned. In this role, he was responsible for some very effective work.
