Into the fire: is this the world's most dangerous job?

Article Abstract:

The main role of vulcanologists is to predict when volcanoes are going to erupt, rather than trying to prevent an eruption, according to Open University vulcanologist Mark Davies. He has been involved in work on around 15 active volcanoes while undertaking his PhD research into developing methods of remote sensing. He has been particularly involved in monitoring volcanic activity on the island of Montserrat, where one of his tasks was to measure the noxious gases being given off.

Looking for ways to help the lads catch up

Article Abstract:

Girls continue to perform better than boys at GCSE level. Indeed, the gap between boys and girls is widening, and this has prompted some schools to consider ways in which boys could be helped to perform better at GCSE level. Research undertaken within the Open University's School of Education indicates that boys and girls have different approaches to the task of learning. These differences could be either an advantage or a disadvantage, according to the learning situation.
