IT is transforming the world of work

Article Abstract:

Teleworking, along with other forms of flexible working, is having a significant impact on the UK workplace. There are now as many as 4 million teleworkers in the UK, according to estimates produced at European Teleworking Week in late 1998. The shift towards teleworking has been fuelled by the introduction of affordable and powerful information technology equipment such as computers and fax machines. Many companies are now realizing that they can make substantial cost savings by encouraging more employees to work at home. Most recently, British Telecom has announced plans to have a tenth of its 100,000 employes working from home.
