Invasion of the iron-snatchers

Article Abstract:

Professor Peter Williams from the department of genetics of Leicester University, UK is undertaking research on iron transport mechanisms for Salmonella and the development of live vaccines. Bacteria thrive on iron. Once under attack the body attempts to hide iron supplies through a process called the hypoferraemic response where it is stored in the liver. Many bacteria are sophisticated and produce siderophores which collect free iron and others manufacture a protein on their surface which can steal the iron from the body's transferrin.
