The floodgates have opened to a long, long decline in rates

Issues concerning the management of UK interest rates are discussed. It is argued that a combination of weak growth and zero inflation may require significantly lower rates than the market expects at present.

The UK government's plans to eliminate compulsory retirement are discussed. The ageing of society makes it vital that some people continue to work beyond the conventional retirement age.

Cut the red tape and let small firms breathe

Article Abstract:

The UK's small businesses would benefit greatly from being able to operate under fewer government regulations. Recent developments, including the introduction of self assessment for tax, have placed heavy regulatory burdens on small businesses, which cannot afford to employ people to deal with these matters. The bureaucratic pressure on small businesses in the UK is acceptable by international standards, but Chancellor Gordon Brown should still consider measures to help small businesses in his forthcoming 1999 Budget.
