Italy's new crop stifled in the shadow of a paradise lost

Article Abstract:

The Italian motion picture industry produced a number of major movies in the 1950s and 1960s, but foundered from the early 1970s. Motion pictures by Leonardo Pieraccioni and Roberto Benigni are heralded as representing a revival of the industry in the 1990s. They are from Tuscany, which is a healthy sign since the industry has previously been dominated by Rome, and they also represent new talent. Production resources in Italy have tended to be monopolized by a few movie makers, and distribution tends to marginalize new Italian movies.

Mike Myers: the guy who seduced America

Article Abstract:

Mike Myers, who first came to public attention through his writing for 'Saturday Night Live' and through Wayne Campbell, the hero of the 1992 film 'Wayne's World,' has now seen a strong revival in his popularity through the character Austin Powers. The film 'Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me' has attracted very large audiences, making $57 million in its opening weekend. Myers as Powers is appearing in many magazines and advertisements. Ironically, Austin Powers is becoming the very thing it was mocking in the first place.
