It's time for the Unionists to surrender a little bit of ground

Article Abstract:

Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble is a key figure in the talks on a peace agreement for Northern Ireland. This is because he is, among all leading Unionists, the closest ally of the majority of ordinary people in Northern Ireland who seek peace. If he sacrifices his leadership merely to reach an agreement that appears good in theory, this agreement will not be successful. Unionists who are preparing to oppose concessions must be reminded that they are not being asked to surrender.

This time, the IRA might make a real difference

Article Abstract:

Direct talks between the Ulster Unionists and Sinn Fein have led to a statement on decommissioning which came not only from Sinn Fein, but from the IRA itself. This is a very significant development for the Ulster Unionists, who have pursued the pretence that the IRA and Sinn Fein are quite separate. There are still fears on both sides about decommissioning and power-sharing, but officials involved in the negotiations continue to work very hard and hope has not disappeared.
