I've decided to kill myself. Well, not really, I'm only joking

Article Abstract:

There has been a mixed reaction to a column in The Observer apparently written by a journalist planning to commit suicide. The column seemed genuine at first sight, but further investigation reveals that it was a spoof. Some people feel that this was in bad taste, but Observer editor Roger Alton believes that suicide and all the reactions it prompts are ideal subjects for newspaper satire. He emphasizes that the column was a satire on confessional journalism and newspaper attitudes to it, rather than a column about death.

Dailies battle-scarred in the circulation war

Article Abstract:

The conflict in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, has not made a significant impact on the circulation of UK newspapers. However, The Independent, The Express, The Daily Telegraph, The Star and The Mirror all saw rises in circulation in May 1999. The Guardian experienced its lowest monthly sale since Dec 1998, raising questions about its redesign and accompanying advertising promotion. The Mirror regained its lead over The Daily Mail, while The Sunday Mirror had an unusually successful month.
