Jack Kane
Article Abstract:
Politician and public servant Jack Kane was unable to attend university because he felt that he had to help his widowed mother. He began his working life as a clerk on a building site. He helped to create a Labour party brand in Niddre Mains, Craigmillar, Scotland, and became councillor for the Liberton ward at the age of 27. He volunteered for the Royal Artillery in 1940. After the second world war, he resumed his seat on Edinburgh City Council, and worked as librarian and then district secretary of the Workers' Educational Association.

Sir James Lighthill
Article Abstract:
Mathematician James Lighthill gained a BA from Trinity College, Cambridge, England, during the second world war. He became Senior Lecturer at Manchester University, England, at the age of 22, and at 26 took the Beyer Professorship of Applied Mathematics at the same university. He worked extensively on gas dynamics, and also launched two significant new fields in fluid mechanics. He became Director of the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough, England, in 1959.

Professor Robert Rankin
Article Abstract:
Mathematician Robert Rankin was born in Garlieston, Scotland, in 1915. He studied at Clare College, Cambridge, England, and after serving in the Ministry of Supply during the second world war became a University Lecturer in Mathematics and Fellow of Clare College.
