Klement Slavicky

Article Abstract:

Composer and conductor Klement Slavicky studied at the Prague Conservatoire between 1927 and 1932. He attended the composition masterclass of Josef Suk between 1931 and 1933, and from 1934 to 1935 was in the conducting masterclass of Vaclav Talich. He joined Czechoslovak Radio as a music producer and staff conductor in 1936. From 1940, he was a senior music producer and programme planner. The first of his 'Symfonietas' was published in 1940, and in 1941 he won the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts Prize.

James Blades

Article Abstract:

Musician, teacher and author James Blades left school in 1915, becoming an apprentice at Brotherhood's engineering firm. He taught himself to drum after the first world war, and gained his first professional engagement in Jun 1921. He performed in many theatres and dance bands in London, England, during the 1920s, and in 1931 was invited to join the band of Jerry Hoey at the Piccadilly Hotel. He joined the London Film Symphony Orchestra in 1932.

Stephen Trier

Article Abstract:

Musician and teacher Stephen Trier entered the Royal College of Music in 1947. He played in the Ernest Reid Symphony Orchestra while still a student, and was invited to join the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for the 1950 tour of the US. He remained a member of this orchestra until 1961. He joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1964, and remained there until he retired in 1995 following the onset of Parkinson's Disease.
