Last look at our dazzling neighbour

Article Abstract:

The Magellan radar mapper which is surveying Venus should complete its gravitational mapping of Venus by May 15 1993. Funds will then run out and end the planetary explorations. Venus consists of 2/3 rolling plains and 1/3 lowlands. Close-up topographic coverage of 99% of the surface shows the absence of water. There are 900 craters due to the low erosion rate, the oldest created 800 million years ago. Venus is covered with thousands of volcanoes and 80% of its surface is covered by lava.

Come in, Valeri and Yelena, your time is up

Article Abstract:

Russian cosmonaut Valeri Poliakov is soon to return to Earth after achieving a space endurance record of 438 days. He has been accompanied by flight engineer Yelena Kondakova, who is now the new holder of the female world record for time in space. Poliakov has many years experience in long-term space travel, but had to overcome opposition to his selection for the latest mission. Kondakova also faced opposition, as the space hierarchy is still very male-dominated.

By Jove, I think we'll make it!

Article Abstract:

The US Galileo spacecraft is set to enter orbit around the planet Jupiter shortly. It is scheduled to undertake 11 elliptical orbits around the planet over the next 23 months, and will have the opportunity to record extremely valuable data about a planet which remains relatively undiscovered. This space mission has experienced many delays, and scientists are very relieved that it is finally on the point of success.
