Laughing all the way to a prime-time deal

Article Abstract:

The annual Montreal Comedy Festival attracts many publicists, agents and network television executives. Around 500 performers are specially invited from many different countries, and each performer is allocated a five-minute showcase slot. Following these performances, agents seek to establish contact with the most promising comedians. Some observers believe that the comedians are too willing to make compromises to make their work commercially attractive.

Sharon, Tracey... Oswald

Article Abstract:

There has been extensive criticism of 'Mosley,' a four-part Channel 4 serial about Sir Oswald Mosley that is to be broadcast shortly. Some observers believe that the serial is not sufficiently critical of fascism and that it is misguided in portraying Mosley as attractive and glamorous. Jewish writers Maurice Gran and Laurence Marks do not deny that they portray Mosley as charismatic, but feel that they show him as ultimately unacceptable.

Contentious? Moi?

Article Abstract:

French-born Antoine de Caunes has become an extremely popular television presenter in the UK. This is mainly because of his great gift for making fun of himself and for self-irony. Rapido, the production company he co-owns, unashamedly produces programmes with no real cultural content, but this has been to his benefit. He believes that he has gained supporters because he represents something exotic.
