Leap of faith by the men of God

Article Abstract:

UK church leaders have met to discuss the place of religion in modern society. They are aware that the church is increasingly failing to address the reality of the lives of most ordinary people, and that traditional religious vocabulary can actually alienate those the church seeks to influence. They are not necessarily happy with the growing trend for the church to remain silent on social issues such as divorce and single parenthood in order to avoid alienating growing sections of the population, but realize that modern society needs religious values such as giving and love more than ever.

Keeping faith in the system

Article Abstract:

The 1988 Education Reform Act contained provisions making collective worship in schools a statutory requirement. However, school inspectors now find that 40% of schools are not meeting these statutory requirements, and up to 80% of head teachers are unwilling to hold a formal act of worship. This is causing concern among church leaders, who now believe that it may be better not to force schools to hold a daily act of worship, which will probably be carried out by unwilling staff and may therefore put children off religion.
