Learning is hard when you're too weak to eat

Article Abstract:

Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is key cause of long-term illness among schoolchildren in the UK. It causes automatic functions such as blood pressure, sleep patterns and heart rhythm to behave in extremely unpredictable ways, and has a severe impact on some patients. They may suffer very poor memory, be unable to talk clearly and become intolerant to light. Many local education authorities are reluctant to accept that children suffering from ME actually get worse if they are forced to attend school, and will not provide the Statement of Special Educational Need which is required if the child is to receive home tuition.

How schoolchildren slouch off to a bad start

Article Abstract:

Chartered physiotherapist Wendy Emberson is researching schoolchildren's posture. She examined 90 children aged between five and 11, and found 90% with posture problems. Faulty weight-bearing on the legs causes injury when playing sport without preparation. Some reasons are the lack of PE lessons with bending and stretching exercises, the decline of walking to school for safety reasons, and modern teaching methods requiring children to twist round to see the teacher.

Couch potatoes? Not us ...

Article Abstract:

Most boys believe that they are very physically active, as they often cycle or play football regularly. However, they generally still do not undertake as much exercise as experts recommend. Furthermore, physical activity sessions at school are often limited, especially as children grow older. There has been a dramatic decline over recent years in the number of children who walk to school, and they often do not take part in organised sport.
