Let me tell you about being Scottish

Article Abstract:

UK politicians who take a traditional line on nationalism often have very confused views. They cannot explain why devolution for Scotland and Wales would leave the Scots and Welsh better off, and are not sure whether their claim for self-government is driven by geography, history or ethnicity. Administrative devolution brings government closer to ordinary people, but this argument applies to the whole of the UK, not just to Wales and Scotland. Modern nationalism goes beyond traditional boundaries, and is no longer limited to a single debating chamber.

Edinburgh's roads rage with contempt for New Labour

Article Abstract:

Edinburgh, Scotland, faces a serious traffic problem which can only be solved by using drastic measures, such as a road pricing system to exclude private cars from the center. The Edinburgh Festival is a cultural event at which the government has been a common subject. Edinburgh is seen as the Scottish city which most favors the United Kingdom, but there are deeply critical views of the government. The debate on traffic congestion and other issues appears to have the common theme of disillusionment with the United Kingdom government.

The Union flag has had its day in the sun

Article Abstract:

The Union flag of the United Kingdom is seen as sacred by some people, yet it has a short history, and has a dubious claim to representing national pride. The flag dates from 1801 and is younger than the Old Glory. The Union flag is used for marketing for pop groups, and has been used by fascists. There is a case for flying the flags of Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England separately, and even for each family to have their own flag. The Union flag is a relic from the 19th century.
