Lethal epidemic is much larger than feared

Article Abstract:

The number of people suffering from HIV infection or Aids is now in decline in the industrialized world. However, in the world as a whole the number of people with the HIV virus is probably much larger than has traditionally been assumed. HIV and Aids remain a very serious problem in the developing world, where an estimated 2,300,000 people will die of Aids-related diseases in 1997, up by 50% from 1996. There has been a very sharp rise in new infections in Africa and parts of Latin America and Asia, with children being particularly badly affected.

Church repents over wartime silence

Article Abstract:

The French Catholic Church has sought God's forgiveness for failing to speak out against the persecution of Jews by the Vichy regime between 1940 and 1944. It recognizes that a small number of French bishops and priests were courageous enough to take a stand, with some helping Jews to escape. However, it admits that the vast majority of senior church men supported the Vichy regime. It has asked the Jewish people to accept its apology for failing to take action.

Time for real Euro democracy

Article Abstract:

Recent complaints from the Select Committee on European Legislation about problems relating to draft European Union laws highlight wider issues regarding the openness and accountability of the European Union. There is considerable opposition to making the European Union operate in a more democratic way, as this would slow it down even more. However, this should not be used as an excuse for failing to make the European Union more personal and more accountable.
