Let's not make a farce out of funding

Article Abstract:

There have been some very extreme reactions to the decisions which have been made recently about the allocation to charities and other bodies of National Lottery funds. Some observers have started to claim that the National Lottery is taxing the poor and benefiting the rich, and are extremely concerned about the fact that charities are receiving little assistance from the National Lottery. These reactions are rather extreme, and it would be better to wait until projects are well underway before making any judgements on the allocation of National Lottery funds.

It has taken a gamble to restore our heritage

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that the Heritage Lottery Fund, which distributes money raised by the National Lottery, is failing to properly assess public opinion about which projects should be supported. Its decision to help secure for the National Trust for Scotland around 20 mountains and a very large area of land in the Cairngorms has been criticised by some, who claim that ordinary city dwellers do not benefit at all from such schemes. However, the managers of the Heritage Lottery Fund believe that it should work in many different areas.

What gives a good cause a bad name?

Article Abstract:

There has been very negative media coverage regarding the first allocations of National Lottery funds which the Charities Board is likely to make. Some newspapers have expressed opposition to news that money is likely to go to projects dealing with alcohol and drug abuse, for example. This is a very misguided view, as it is precisely this sort of work which should be supported with National Lottery funds.
