Liberte! Fraternite! Fromage!

Article Abstract:

There has been considerable debate about the possible health risks of unpasteurized cheese in France since the beginning of 1999. Many French cheese traditionalists fear that the vast range of French cheeses will be significantly reduced as a result of new regulations designed to prevent listeriosis. The listeria germ has been found in a series of soft cheeses recently, and sales of the cheeses involved have dropped sharply. Many ordinary French people feel that it is unsafe to eat cheese made from unpasteurized milk, but in fact all the cheeses in which the listeria germs were found were heat-treated.

Crimes without passion

Article Abstract:

The cases of Florency Rey, who has been convicted of four murders, and Veronique Herbert, who is on trial for murder, seem to have more links with the US than with France. Both cases have strong links with random violence, sex and the life portrayed in films. The murders reflect the way in which French society has become rootless and constantly changing in the 1990s. Both murders were motiveless and pointless, highlighting the way in which young French people feel distanced from the values of society.

The green, white and orange tiger

Article Abstract:

Ireland achieved economic growth of 7.3% in 1995, giving it the highest growth rate in the western world for the third consecutive year. The economy is forecast to expand by a further 5-6% in 1996, while inflation, at 2.5%, is already the lowest in Europe. Some observers attribute Ireland's economic success to European Union subsidies and strong incentives for foreign firms, but this hides the fact that the country is managing to create high-quality, highly paid jobs.
