More, Mr Beadle Brown

Article Abstract:

The UK's current tax system works to the disadvantage of the least well off, who are in effect taxed at a much higher rate than the very wealthy. This problem has been recognized by Prime Minister Tony Blair, who has commissioned Martin Taylor, the head of Barclays Bank, to undertake a review of the tax and benefits system by the end of 1997. The right-wing Institute for Economic Affairs is calling for a cut in taxes on the low-paid, while the left-wing Institute for Public Policy Research believes that benefits should be phased out gradually if an unemployed person finds work.

After the bomb came the fall-out

Article Abstract:

The bombing of Manchester, UK, in June 1996 did not attract enough sympathy and was very soon forgotten by those whom it did not affect. To the surprise of Josephine Abady, US theatrical director, the Prime Minister, John Major, did not visit the scene, and only a minor royal visited. The government is contributing only 150,000 pounds sterling directly to restoration of the city, the remainder of a 21 millions pounds sterling grant coming from the European Union coffers.

In a faraway corner of the universe ...

Article Abstract:

The Hubble Space Telescope is transmitting images to Earth from the very edge of the Universe, causing great excitement among astronomers. These images will allow questions which have remained unresolved for many years, such as how the galaxies took shape, to be reconsidered and possibly even resolved. These discoveries will have repercussions in many areas of science.
