Life after rock'n'roll

Article Abstract:

The origins of writer and musician Nick Cave's 1999 Meltdown music festival can be traced back to the band The Birthday Party, which came to London, England, in 1979 and performed for four years. This festival, which will feature performers including jazz musician Nina Simone, has attracted a great deal of interest, and will be the most successful Meltdown in financial terms since the festival began. The festival can be seen as a form of vindication for Cave's breaking away from the rock-star mould.

So they think this is art?

Article Abstract:

Offset, an informal collective of around 30 poets, musicians and artists, was formed in Mar 1995 by Matthew Glamorre and Neil Kaczor. Many of its members had had experience of the London club scene, but did not wish to be too closely associated with it. Instead, they see themselves as an underground arts gang. Their main aim is to act as a channel for the anger of people who are marginalised because of their sexuality, sex or education, pointing them towards creative outlets.

State of independence

Article Abstract:

Record shop Rough Trade, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 1996, played a vital role in establishing indie music in the UK. It prompted the creation of a distribution company and a record label, and being independent of the large record labels allowed it to respond rapidly to pop music trends. Indie cannot be defined as a specific sound, and has embraced a wide range of artists and groups.
