Little to grouse about

Article Abstract:

Numbers of blackgame have been declining rapidly in almost all parts of their range in the UK over recent years. However, this is not the case at the 32,000 acre Abernethy Forest Reserve on Speyside, England. Here, there are now more birds than on all the other 17 local sporting estates. This is the result of extensive work by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, which purchased the estate with a view to protecting its main bird species. Birds there include black grouse, Scottish crossbill and capercaillie.

The hunter hunted

Article Abstract:

Considerable efforts, often by volunteers, are made at this time of year to protect the nests of rare birds from people who may steal the eggs or the chicks. Nest-robbers are generally people who take the eggs for their own collections or who steal eggs or fledglings in order to rear the birds for sale. It is often very difficult to catch these people, and they usually receive only a minor punishment even if they are actually caught in the act of robbing a nest.

Living with wolves, and the odd bear

Article Abstract:

The landscape in the Carpathian mountain region of Romania is extremely interesting. Visitors to the region in autumn will be able to enjoy the spectacular colours of the deciduous forests on the lower slopes of the mountains. Around 5,000 people live in and around the mountains, and there are also an estimated 1,000 lynx, 3,000 wolves and 4,000 bears. Efforts are being made to encourage tourists to the region, which is extremely poor.
