Live fast, die young

Article Abstract:

The recent death of former Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter Florence Griffith-Joyner at the age of only 38 has served to revive controversy about the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sport. Many observers at the Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, in 1988 felt that she had been taking such drugs, as her physical appearance had undergone dramatic changes. Sports authorities have tried to wipe out the use of performance-enhancing drugs, but new drugs are constantly being developed.

Christie could never outrun shadow of drugs

Article Abstract:

Sprinter Linford Christie has denied that he has ever taken banned drugs, even though traces of a banned steroid were found in his urine during a test undertaken in Feb 1999. The possibility that he was taking banned drugs was first raised in the 1980s, when his body shape changed significantly and his performance rose to that of a top-level athlete. However, it would seem very unlikely that he would have taken banned substances as his career is drawing to an end.

Warning: reading about drugs can seriously confuse

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly clear that dope-testing in athletics is in chaos. There is no consistency in the results of drugs tests, or in the penalties imposed. Action must now be taken for the benefit of administrators, athletes, the public and the dope-testers. In particular, the dope-testing regime must be amended so that athletes are protected from exposure to drugs which could prove fatal if taken incorrectly.
