Lord Dainton

Article Abstract:

Chemist Frederick Dainton gained a scholarship to St John's College, Oxford, England, where he came under the influence of Dr H.W. Thompson. He was introduced in this way to studies of chemical reaction rates, and went on to publish around 200 research papers in this field. He took a keen interest in the medical effects of his work, and believed that medical education and research had a key role to play in the quality of future patient treatment. He became President of the Faraday Society and the Royal Chemical Society.

Gp Capt George Denholm

Article Abstract:

Air force officer George Denholm first gained military experience at Cambridge University, where he was involved with the guns and artillery section of the University Cadet Corps. He joined the 603 Squadron of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force in 1933, and became a full time officer in 1939. He led 603 Squadron during the second world war, and was one of the Allied officers who received the surrender of the Germans near Oslo, Norway.

Douglas McIntosh

Article Abstract:

Educationist Douglas McIntosh gained a first class honours degree at St Andrews University, Scotland, and then took a degree in Education at Edinburgh University, Scotland. He was appointed Deputy Director at Fife County Council at the age of 27, becoming director at 33 in 1944. He was responsible for encouraging gifted pupils at Kirkcaldy High School, and was Principal of Moray House College of Education between 1966 and 1973.
