Lottie, the wild woman, doesn't live here any more

Article Abstract:

A friend describes the lack of medical care for someone who is a paranoid schizophrenic or a drug-induced psychotic. A person in this condition could not finish sentences, would giggle uncontrollably and stare at nothing. The authorities only admit patients to hospital against their will if they have attacked someone. Then a social worker can section them under the Mental Health Act. In this case the hospital failed to give release papers, a letter of diagnosis, sufficient medication or to find accommodation.

Method amid the madness

Article Abstract:

The violent behaviour of schizophrenic people can lead to hospitalisation, but after a few months, they are discharged. A weekly injection keeps them calm but they may not attend for it. General practitioners are unable to help unless the patient hits someone. Psychiatric social workers can recommend hospital admission. A compulsory section order means the police can take the individual into a secure psychiatric unit by force. Discharge to a hostel and a support system should help prevent recurrence.

The point is not what causes schizophrenia, but how to control it

Article Abstract:

Treatment for schizophrenia in the UK over recent years has focused on medication. Indeed, medication is now often the only approach used to control schizophrenia. Researchers remain at a distance from schizophrenia sufferers, and do not attach any importance to what schizophrenics say about themselves. It is possible that the best approach to treating schizophrenia would be to combine medication with therapy, but this treatment is rarely used because medication is a lot cheaper than psychotherapy.
