Malachi Martin

Article Abstract:

Writer and priest Malachi Martin read for a BA in humanities at University College, Dublin, Ireland. He subsequently spent three years studying philosophy and three years teaching at a Jesuit college in Ireland. He then undertook four years of theological studies at Milltown Park, Dublin. He was ordained into the priesthood in 1954. He gained doctorates from the universities of Louvain, Belgium, and Oxford, England, and from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel. He became Professor of Palaeontology and Semitic Languages at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, Italy.

W.J. West

Article Abstract:

Writer William West studied for a time at the Architectural Association, where he developed an interest in photography, and at Brunel University. He worked as a railwayman before travelling to India in 1967. He also travelled around the US, and then spent the 1970s in Exeter, England, where he started the Market Park Gallery. He published a small pamphlet in 1979, and was inspired to begin writing again. He published George Orwell's wartime broadcasts in 1985, and in 1991 published his polemic 'The Strange Rise of Semi-Literate England.'

Nirad C. Chaudhuri

Article Abstract:

Writer Nirad Chaudhuri shifted away from orthodox Hindu beliefs as a teenager, becoming strongly attracted to the UK and English literature. He studied in Calcutta, India, but lacked the sustained application required for a university degree. He had editorial attachments to leading Calcutta magazines before working as secretary to a Bengali politician between 1937 and 1941. His first book, 'The Autobiography of an Unknown Indian,' was published in 1951, and he went on to become India's leading writer of English prose.
