They call him 'the Ayatollah.'

Article Abstract:

Halle Orchestra Music Director-elect Mark Elder believes that it is vital to improve the orchestra's image, ensuring that it becomes one of the key cultural attractions in Manchester, England, once more. He feels that it may now be appropriate to revive the Halle's links with the centre of great English music. He would like to present all of Elgar's works, rather than just the small number that are always played. He will conduct 24 Halle concerts each season, and will therefore spend at least 12 weeks every year with the orchestra.

It's a player's right to choose

Article Abstract:

There can be many different factors involved in the selection of the right conductor for a particular orchestra. This has been highlighted recently by the contest between Daniel Barenboim and Sir Simon Rattle to become principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Problems may arise if members of the orchestra are asked to express an opinion, as the criteria by which they judge conductors vary greatly and may have little connection with musical ability.
