Market collapse hits new issues

Article Abstract:

UK flotations have been very negatively affected by instability on world financial markets. Only 12 companies joined the market in the three months to Sep 1998, from 30 in the previous quarter. Similarly, the number of acquisition and merger deals has fallen. Declining corporate activity will have widespread repercussions, creating problems for both venture capital firms and large banks. The main problem for new issues in unstable markets is that it is not possible for buyers and sellers to establish a view on valuations.

RAC sell-off faces a rough ride

Article Abstract:

It may prove difficult for US conglomerate Cendant to gain regulatory approval for its planned 450 million pounds sterling purchase of the Royal Automobile Club (RAC). Problems in securing the deal would have a negative impact on the RAC's 12,000 full members, who are set to receive a 35,000 pounds sterling windfall payment. The main difficulty is that the purchase would reduce the UK breakdown market to only two major players.
