Marry you, Mr Rochester? I've got better things to do

Article Abstract:

Victorian governesses were the first women to move away from their homes to find work because their families had insufficient means to support them. A great many of them turned this necessity greatly to their advantage and gained an independence that enabled them to live rewarding and enjoyable lives. As unchaperoned women, they enjoyed the attention of many men. It was not unusual for men of the families for whom they were working to propose marriage. Many of the governesses refused these proposals, instead preferring to work.

Things could only get better

Article Abstract:

Women accounted for almost one third of the guerrilla forces in Nicaragua in the 1970s, and some took great risks in order to bring about the Sandinista victory. After this time, they continued to serve in the army as it clashed with the Contras. The activities of Nicaraguan women during these years are portrayed in a new film by Ken Loach, entitled 'Carla's Song.' This is set in 1987, and shows a woman who has fought the Contras, fled Nicaragua and then returns to the country to meet her old comrades.
