Memories are made of this

Article Abstract:

Alzheimer's disease and other disorders that have a negative impact on the memory now affect up to 800,000 people in the UK. The ageing of the population means that the number of sufferers is set to rise. It remains uncertain what causes Alzheimer's disease, in which nerve cells in the brain die and the spaces between them become congested with the protein amyloid. Memory loss is associated with ageing, but is not an inevitable consequence of it. It is now known that eating healthily and keeping the brain active can protect against memory loss.
