Professor James McFarlane

Article Abstract:

James McFarlane was a Founding Dean of the University of East Anglia's School of European Studies who specialised in Scandinavian Studies. He studied at Oxford University, and wanted to carry out research on 'The Man Without Qualities', and the novel's author, Robert Musil, but there was not enough expertise at Oxford, so he took up Scandinavian Studies instead. He was well-known for his work on Henrik Ibsen. He was also involved in regional bodies such as the Council for the Eastern Arts Association, during his time at East Anglia.

Vesey Norman

Article Abstract:

Arms and armour scholar Vesey Norman developed an interest in armour at an early age. After failing to complete studies in agriculture, he ran a farm in Glenshee, Scotland, with his first wife, whom he married in 1954. An injury forced him to abandon farming, and he decided to establish a new career in the museum profession. He studied for an external General Arts BA at London University, and subsequently visited all the main armouries of Europe and North America.
