A taxing tale of morality

Article Abstract:

Paying taxes is a legal obligation and not a moral duty. The tax system was created by law to finance government expenditure and has nothing to do with morality. Taxpayers should not feel morally compelled to pay more than their tax liabilities as determined by the law. Those who want to pay additional amounts of tax can certainly do so, but they are not under obligation to give to the government more than their legal due. Tax agencies, for their part, should try to conduct their jobs in strict compliance with the letter of the law and should resist the temptation to involve the issue of morality in tax collection. Only in a perfect world can people be expected to voluntarily pay the amount of tax that they and the society deem to be right and fair.

Men at work and wives at tea

Article Abstract:

Ex-patriate wives are still expected to give dinner parties for the sake of their husband's business, and to spend their time at coffee parties and activity clubs. Employment is not available and it would be difficult to manage a career when moving frequently. Motherhood makes life more interesting until the children become old enough for boarding school and their mothers miss them. Employers often require their male staff working abroad to be married, but fail to appreciate that modern wives work themselves.
