Monument to science, if not to style

Article Abstract:

Down House, Charles Darwin's family house on the edge of south-east London, England, has been restored and will shortly open to the public. The house was purchased in 1996 by English Heritage, which invested 2.2 million pounds sterling of lottery money in its restoration. Old photographs and paintings were used as reference material for the reconstruction of the five period rooms downstairs, with each room illustrating a different element of Darwin's personality. Seven bedrooms upstairs have been converted into exhibition rooms.

A monument to cancer care

Article Abstract:

The first Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre was opened in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1996, a year after the death from cancer of Maggie Keswick Jencks, wife of architecture critic and author Charles Jencks. A second centre, designed by Frank Gehry, a close friend of Keswick Jencks, has been constructed in Dundee, Scotland. This building shows great sensitivity and attention to detail. It has facilities including a relaxation room, an information and library area, two small counselling rooms and two therapy rooms.
