How to lose a fortune in two years

Article Abstract:

US pet retailer PetsMart was very confident that it could establish a strong presence in the UK when it purchased pet superstore operator Pet City, based in Swindon, England, for 150 million pounds sterling in 1997. However, this venture has proved unsuccessful, and PetsMart is now seeking to sell off its UK operations for only 10 million pounds sterling. Experts believe that PetsMart made a mistake in introducing US-style product mixes and sizes. Furthermore, its cheaper product lines proved unpopular in the UK, where people like to buy premium goods for their pets.
