Mr Hague, you could make Lords reform more radical

Article Abstract:

The UK Conservative party is not opposed to reform of the House of Lords, but does not wish to see the removal of the voting rights of hereditary peers. It believes that there should be a combined committee of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. This approach is misguided, as it would mean that no real progress would be made. The Conservative party must now recognize that the voting rights of hereditary peers must be removed. However, it must also see that an appointed second chamber is not sustainable beyond the short term.

Yes, the boom is coming

Article Abstract:

The UK saw consumer spending increase by 0.8% in the first quarter of 1996, the most rapid advance for more than two years. Economic indicators now suggest that there will be a boom in consumer spending in the near future. This will be of particular benefit to the Conservative party in the pre-election period. The government would still prefer to wait until spring 1997 for an election, but the latest figures have given it hope that it may be successful if forced to hold an election earlier.
