Murderous reality behind the myth of Mr Livingstone

Article Abstract:

Ken Livingstone, who is seeking the Labour party's nomination as candidate for Mayor of London, England, is being portrayed as a much-maligned radical whose ideas have now become part of the political mainstream. This is particularly the case regarding his stance on Northern Ireland. Here, it is being alleged that Livingstone merely called for dialogue at a time when nobody else did, and that he has now been vindicated by events. In fact, it can be argued that, in the early 1980s, Livingstone actually encouraged those who were prepared to take lives in Northern Ireland, whether he intended to or not.

Labour's Essex man

Article Abstract:

Labour party home affairs spokesman Jack Straw first became involved in politics as a student at Leeds University. He became leader of the NUS, and lobbied the government on issues such as saving the student grant. He is not a natural orator, but benefits from a clear understanding of the views of ordinary people. Labour party leader Tony Blair values and shares this understanding.

So many Labour MPs - but so little for them to do

Article Abstract:

The UK's Labour MPs have responsibility without real power. The size of the House of Commons should be reduced, and consideration should be given to ensuring that all Labour backbenchers serve on a party/government commission investigating the renewal and delivery of policy.
