Not-so-simple Simon

Article Abstract:

Verdi composed two very different versions of his opera 'Simon Boccanegra.' The first, premiered in 1857, was not very well received, while the second, premiered in 1891, was highly acclaimed. The Royal Opera is staging both versions at Covent Garden in London, England, as part of its 1997 Verdi Festival. The two versions of the opera are so different that there is a strong artistic argument in favour of presenting them as two separate pieces. The second version contains some major revisions, and there are also some significant musical developments from the first version.

How to rock the classical world

Article Abstract:

EMI's approach to the marketing of a recording by young violinist Vanessa-Mae has been widely misinterpreted, according to Roger Lewis, managing director of Premier, formed from the restructuring of EMI and now in control of 12 different labels covering a wide range of musical styles. The recording was aimed at the rock market, rather than the classical market, and was therefore promoted as such. There are now plans for a classical release by the same violinist, but no firm decision has yet been made about how to market this.

B flat is a feminist issue

Article Abstract:

Women have traditionally found it very hard to gain acceptance as composers, according to Diana Ambache, founder of the Ambache Chamber Orchestra. This orchestra places great emphasis on Mozart's concertos, but has also made efforts to play works by women composers who have previously been overlooked. These include the Piano Concerto in B flat by Nanette von Schaden, which is shortly to receive its UK premiere.
