Oleg Stekolnikov has a dream

Article Abstract:

Oleg Stekolnikov farms 1/4 of a hectare and has five cows, a barn, a potato field and a tractor. He produces 25-30 litres of milk compared with the 12 litres of milk an average collective farm cow produces. He and his wife make cottage cheese and sour cream to sell at the market in Moscow. He works a 16-hour day. President Yeltsin said land reform would be a priority for the new government but the local land reform committee was powerless to process Oleg's application. Further attempts to acquire land from the Committee on Land Reform were unsuccessful as you need to know someone on the committee. About 1/3 of collective farms, kolkhoz, are unprofitable.

Will the lights go out across America?

Article Abstract:

David Kessler, the US government's regulator of food and drugs, has been the subject of extensive criticism. Most recently, he has been attacked for seeking more government control over the tobacco industry at a time when the general trend has been towards deregulation. He believes that tobacco should be seen as a drug which must be regulated, having already assembled evidence that nicotine is an addictive drug. Any move to regulate cigarettes will have a significant impact on the country's powerful tobacco companies.
