Partnership plans that don't add up

Article Abstract:

Solicitors and accountants have some reservations about the UK government's planned model for limited liability partnerships. Under the new legislation, the limited liability partner would be obliged to put up a guarantee of between 25,000 pounds sterling and 100,000 pounds sterling per partner. Any excessive earnings would be the target of a clawback if the partnership were to become insolvent. The government would be well advised to consider the model of limited liability partnerships operating in the US, where the partners' private assets are protected from claims on the partnership.

Pronounced dead, but faith has risen once again

Article Abstract:

It was widely believed in the 1970s and 1980s that material and technological advances would lead to the secularization of society, with religion becoming irrelevant. However, there is in fact growing evidence of the power of religious institutions. There has been a shift away from traditional religious structures, but many people still feel a strong need for some form of belief. In the US, the passage of the Freedom from Religious Persecution Act in 1998 has made religious freedom a diplomatic issue.

Childhood lost in Pakistan jails

Article Abstract:

It is common for children arrested for minor crimes in Pakistan to be held with adult prisoners in the country's jails, where they are exposed to very poor conditions. It often takes many months, and sometimes even years, for their case to come to trial, and then the case is usually dismissed. It is believed that there are currently 3,200 child prisoners in Pakistani jails, of whom more than a quarter have spent six months awaiting trial.
