Passing the final hurdle

Article Abstract:

Saving regularly in a building society account is the most straightforward way in which parents can save to meet the costs of higher education for their children. Investing in the stock market is another option, but brings more risks. If parents choose this option, they should consider a personal equity plan, as this offers protection from tax. The best personal equity plans are those which invest in unit trusts which aim specifically for capital growth, rather than those which aim to play out a regular income.

Countdown to college

Article Abstract:

There are a number of practical issues which should be addressed by young people starting a university or college course. It is important to have some money readily available to meet initial expenses, especially as it can take some time for grant money to arrive. Personal possessions must be insured, as student accommodation is often an easy target for thieves. The most appropriate gifts for someone beginning university or college life include phonecards, railcards, book tokens and a bicycle.

It's a penny-pinching life

Article Abstract:

Many British students receive less than the full maintenance grant, as their parents' income is taken into account. Some students may be able to obtain additional funding, for example if they have dependants or have to maintain a home. It is possible to claim travel expenses, but strict conditions apply. Many students experience financial difficulties, and it is therefore worth trying to save some money before going to university.
